Richard Swaback

Richard “Dickie” Swaback, a seasoned naturalist, photographer, and creative mind, has been a cherished longterm resident of Drala Mountain Center (DMC). Immersed in the enchanting natural surroundings, Dickie’s fascination extends to every facet of the ecosystem, from microorganisms to plants, insects, mammals, birds, and amphibians that call DMC home. Unbound by limits, his insatiable curiosity leads him to explore the intricate interrelations of life within the center. In 2017, Dickie unveiled his passion project, a 30-page booklet titled “Biodiversity at Shambhala Mountain Center,” a captivating photo essay showcasing the diverse life forms at SMC. Followed by the publication of, “The Headwaters of RIO RMDC and Life in the Riparian Zone: a photo essay and narrative,” a comprehensive exploration of the riparian ecosystem along the stream flowing through the land. Dickie’s future endeavors include an ambitious project on the biodiversity of the soil, further cementing his legacy as a dedicated observer and chronicler of the natural world. Through his lens and narrative, Dickie Swaback continues to unveil the beauty and interconnectedness of life at the Drala Mountain Center.
