About the Retreat

Welcome to the Dzogchen Teaching and Meditation Retreat with Khenchen Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche, held at Drala Mountain Center for the first time! Spend five days immersed in spiritual growth, with a senior Bön teacher and Dzogchen master, whose warmth and clarity make these ancient teachings feel immediate and alive.

The teachings will consist of specific Dzogchen instructions and guided meditations, along with practices of four generosities such as Chöd, smoke offerings and more, all while in the presence of the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya.

Whether you are new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner, this retreat offers a meaningful entry point into Dzogchen – introducing its foundations for beginners and deepening the practice for those who already carry it.

What to Expect

  • Learn Dzogchen meditation techniques and receive empowerments directly from Khenchen Rinpoche, passed down through an unbroken lineage of realized masters.
  • Immerse yourself in authentic Bön teachings, rituals, prayers, chanting and mantra recitation with Khenchen Rinpoche, accompanied by an experienced Gheshe, delivered with humor, precision and depth.
  • Experience sky gazing, learn techniques for dark meditation and practice Tsa Lung – a traditional Bön yogic practice combining breath, movement, and visualization to open subtle energy channels and support meditative awareness.
  • Take part in a Tibetan Bön retreat held beside the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, built as a memorial to meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
  • Participate in live questions and answers with Khenchen Rinpoche both in the group setting and some limited one-on-one opportunities.

FAQs

Do I need to have experience meditating to participate in this teaching?
No, you do not need to have experience with Bön practices or any meditation practices in order to participate in this teaching and meditation retreat. All levels are welcome!

Is this a silent meditation retreat?
No, silence is not required. There will be a lot of contemplative time and you could remain in a quiet and even silent space if you would like.

Do I need to sit cross legged, on the floor or bring my own meditation cushion or chair?
No, we will have cushions available for floor seating as well as chairs available. We will have periods of sitting, along with breaks, so please feel free to bring anything with you that makes you feel most comfortable while seated.

Do I need to understand Tibetan or have read about Bön or Dzogchen?
No, not at all. The handouts include both Tibetan and English for depth of understanding and there will be time for questions throughout the teaching. All levels are welcome!

Khenchen Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche

Khenchen Rinpoche is a direct and close disciple of the late H.E. Yongdzin Lopön Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, the Bön tradition’s most senior master and one of the world’s foremost experts on Dzogchen. Geshe Yungdrung Gyaltsen Phagontsang

Geshe was born in Eastern Tibet. He was able to escape Tibet into Nepal and sought refuge at Triten Norbutse monastery. He also traveled to Menri Monastery in India for his Geshe degree. He has immersed himself in Dzogchen, Tantra and Tummo practices. More information is available on Himalayan Bön Association’s website. 

Lodging

We have several accommodations to choose from during checkout.
All options include our healthy meals and drinks. Inc V, VG, GF.

Car Camping
We have 5 primitive parking spots in the Rigden parking lot, for simply parking and sleeping. This includes food and access our bathhouses in Rigden Lodge
Note: We don’t have any water or electric hook ups for RV’s.

Single and Double Tents

Located in campgrounds throughout the property, these 12′ x 14′ tents have two twin beds, two bookcases and a hanging clothes rack.* Each campground offers a shared bathhouse. Summer platform tents are available from late May through early September. A tent can be rented as a single (without a roommate) or a double (with a roommate).

Some of our campgrounds were impacted by a recent wildfire and the affects may still be visible this summer, however, they are safe to use.

Bedding is not provided. Please bring your own twin sheets, blanket or sleeping bag, a pillow and towels.

Dormitories
Rooms with beds for up to 7-8 people. Gender-segregated with men in their own dorm and women in another. The dorms use a shared bathroom down the hall, which is also equipped with shower stalls.

Monk Rooms
A cost-effective option for participants looking for indoor, solitary lodging, but who don’t mind using a shared bathroom or are looking for a more affordable retreat solution. These rooms are in the same hall as the Ridgen Dormitories, but offer more privacy than the dorms. In addition to a bed, bedding, a private room and closet, the monk rooms also have a large window and a desk and desk chair for added comfort.

Single and Double Rooms
The perfect choice for a retreat where you want both your own space and your own bathroom. Each room offers a little more space, a dresser and closet, and a 3/4s bathroom (toilet, sink, and shower, no bathtub) attached to each room.

Junior Suite
Our Lodge Junior Suites include a queen-size bed topped by a cozy comforter, a desk, dresser, closet and private bath with bathtub, plus a sitting area.
