Posted on May 11, 2021 by Christopher Gibbs

This is a full time, onsite position that requires familiarity with SMC and Shambhala, dynamism, flexibility, a capacity to approach organizational challenges in creative ways, and a strong orientation to customer service. Over time, our new Director of Program Operations will manage all day-to-day operations related to the programs and retreats that we host, which include but is not limited to overseeing our Programs, Guest Services, Kitchen, Gift Store, and Housekeeping departments.

The next Director of Program Operations will be critical to the short and long-term success of SMC, especially as we resume operations following an extended COVID-19 closure and the Cameron Peak Fire that affected much of our land in September 2020. This position reports directly to our Executive Director.

Overview:

Our ideal candidate is professional, kind, humble, and energetic. You understand SMC’s history, Shambhala, and Buddhism, and are also interested in how best to serve retreats designed around mindfulness, yoga, and other contemplative disciplines. You have management experience and are willing to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. You have experience working at a Shambhala land center, other retreat center, or in a similar environment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with Shambhala Mountain Center and/or Shambhala
  • Experience in progressively successful management positions with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff, preferably in a similar not-for-profit or community based organization with guest and/or service-oriented focus.
  • Experience in short and long-term project management
  • Experience in creating and managing budgets
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actively support SMC’s vision, mission, values, principles, and strategic goals, objectives, and initiatives
  •  Supervise, train, and mentor the operations departmental management
  • Direct, oversee, monitor, and maintain accountability for the functioning and financial performance of assigned retreat center operations
  • Work with operational staff to cultivate skills and increase consciousness of the interrelationship between operations departments and the organization as a whole
  • Assess and address emergent needs, issues, and crises that arise for guests and staff in the planning, preparation of and during programs
  • Provide timely, accurate, and complete reports on the operating conditions of the organization.
  • Drive continuous improvements in the experience of our guests.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Full-time (at least 45 hours per week) annual salary ranging from $29,261 to $40,000 depending on experience.Participation in SMC’s Paid Time Off and Paid Sick Leave program (estimated 10 days of PTO accrued in first year of employment, 12 days in second year, 15 days in third and fourth years, 20 days in fifth and subsequent years).
  • Low-cost housing and meal plan (currently $375.00 total per month) required.
  • Free participation in staff classes and programs.

To apply, please submit a cover letter and current resume to cgibbs@shambhalamountain.org.
