About the Retreat

The Sadhana of Mahamudra is an astounding proclamation of the intrinsic purity of the phenomenal world and the spontaneous presence of the guru. Beyond being poetry, it is a founding statement of the richness and power of the Kagyü and Nyingma lineages.

In this retreat, we will explore the spiritual wealth that the Vidyadhara, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, transmitted through his personal teachings, and through the teachers and lineage traditions he brought to us. The Dorje Loppön will present the histories, literal and visionary, of the lineages and key vidyadhara masters. Using the Sadhana of Mahamudra as a leaping off point, the Loppön will offer instruction in formless meditation practices common to mahamudra and dzogchen, and introduce us to the larger dharmic world this practice opens to us.

What to Expect

We will study spiritual songs and teachings including the Aspiration Prayer of Samantabhadra, fruition songs of Yeshe Tsogyal, songs of Marpa and Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye, and teachings of Karmapa Rangjung Dorje. We will study Gampopa’s practice of chandali under Milarepa, and discuss the Kagyü mahamudra path including fingerpainting the six dharmas of Naropa. This will lead to the transition from the annuttarayoga practices like Chakrasamvara to the mahayoga practices like Vajrakilaya, which is heavily influenced by the viewpoint of atiyoga. We will link the Ashe principle with the four kilas embodied by Vajrakilaya. In particular, the insight wisdom kila, which is the primordial Ashe, corresponds to the practice of dzogchen.

The retreat will conclude with a feast offering of the Sun of Wisdom, which is a guru sadhana and feast offering to Chögyam Trungpa’s root guru, Shechen Kongtrül Rinpoche. Throughout the retreat, there will be breakout groups for people working on specific practices to meet and discuss their practice with the Dorje Loppön.

This retreat is especially for practitioners who want to have a deeper, experiential relationship with the Vidyadhara’s transmission. Those who feel a sense of ownership or responsibility for this tradition could regard this retreat as an opportunity to come into closer contact with its essence so that we can carry it forward.

The Loppön will provide reading references prior to the retreat for those who wish to engage them. The reading is not required but highly recommended.

Dorje Loppön Lodrö Dorje was head of the Office of Three Yana Studies from 1976 through 1990, which facilitated the meditation practice and study of the three yanas for Vajradhatu (now Shambhala).
